No guessing over the phone.

Bono sits 8 miles north-west of Jonesboro on US 63, right where the ridge country drops off into open Delta fields. The town started in 1883 around a railroad depot, a big tie yard and a sawmill, so timber's been part of Bono from day one. These days it's mostly old homeplace trees, shelter rows and newer houses on the edge of town. Plenty of those calls end with stump grinding. Down toward Poinsett County, we also cover Trumann.

Bono Trees and the Open-Field Wind

Bono sits on the edge of the flat Mississippi Alluvial Plain. West and north of town the wind can run for miles over bare fields before it hits anything. The first thing it hits is usually a tree line, or the big shade tree beside somebody's farmhouse. I grew up on ground like that, so I know how hard a March wind can lean on a single tree.

That's why wind damage out here looks different than it does in town. In Jonesboro we'll find one broken limb. Around Bono we find whole crowns shoved to one side, cracked trunks and trees laid over with the roots still hanging on.

Old Homeplace Trees

A lot of places around Bono have a pecan or a red oak that went in the year the house did. Big, valuable shade. They also carry heavy limbs that reach way out over roofs and barns, some of them as long as a pickup bed. Careful trimming and deadwooding can keep a tree like that going for years. Honestly, it's some of our favorite work.

Shelter Rows Along Fields and Drives

Rows of trees along a drive or a field edge slow the wind and catch snow. As they age, some die and others lean into the row. Taking out the worst ones and trimming the rest keeps the row working without losing the windbreak.

We'd rather thin a shelter row than clear it. A row with a few gaps still breaks the wind. A row that's gone leaves the house standing alone in the open, and you'll feel that the first winter.

Newer Homes on the Edge of Town

Bono grew from 2,131 people in 2010 to 2,409 in 2020, mostly with newer houses on cleared ground at the edges. Folks planted fast trees like silver maple for quick shade. Many are big enough to reach the roof now. That happened faster than anybody planned.

How much does stump grinding cost in Bono?

Stump grinding in Bono usually costs $120 to $400 for the first stump and $30 to $60 for each extra one, according to HomeGuide's 2026 guide. Pricing is often $2 to $6 per inch of stump width. A huge old hardwood stump can run $300 to $800.

Got a row of old stumps from a cleared fence line? Do them all in one trip. It's far cheaper than one at a time, because the grinder's already off the trailer.

Bigger Lots, Bigger Equipment

Out in the country there is usually room to work, which saves money. Where a tree can be dropped in an open field, felling it whole is quicker than taking it down in pieces. We still lay ground protection mats under the trucks on soft lawns so the yard does not end up rutted.

Access matters too. A gravel drive, a cattle gap or a soft field edge can decide which truck we bring. We check that on the first visit so there are no surprises on work day.

Ice Season Around Bono

Freezing rain is the other big tree problem out here. The January 2009 ice storm knocked out power to about 300,000 homes across northern Arkansas, and many of the broken limbs came off big shade trees and fence-row trees. Ice adds weight to every branch. Long, heavy limbs that reach out over a roof are the first to go.

The best defense is trimming before winter. Shortening the longest limbs and removing dead wood takes away the weight that ice would add to. Pines are a special case. A tall loblolly pine catches ice in its needles and can snap halfway up.

If you ask us, the big pines near a farmhouse are the ones to think hard about. They gave shade for forty years, sure. But one ice night can drop the top third on the kitchen. We'll tell you plainly whether yours is worth the gamble.

Before Our Crew Shows Up

A little prep makes work day go faster:

  • Move cars, trailers and equipment out of the area around the tree.
  • Keep pets and kids inside while we cut.
  • Open gates and tell us about septic lines, wells or buried cables.
  • Let us know if you want to keep the logs for firewood.

Tree Services We Offer in Bono

These are the jobs we do most for Bono homes and small farms. We ground around 600 stumps last year across the county, and a good share were out this way.

  • Stump Grinding

We grind stumps below grade and chase the surface roots, so you can mow, plant or build over the spot. Grindings can be left as mulch or hauled off.

  • Tree Removal

Dead, leaning and storm-cracked trees come down. Near houses and barns we use sectional removal and ropes, one piece at a time. Out in the open we just fell them whole, which is quicker and cheaper for you.

  • Tree Trimming

Big old shade trees get deadwooding and clearance trimming off roofs, barns and drives. We thin crowded crowns so storms pass through them.

  • Storm Damage Cleanup

When the wind lays trees over, the ones leaning on a house or blocking the only drive get handled first. Fence lines and pasture trees can wait a day. We sort it on the phone.

  • Shelter Row Work

We take out dead and leaning trees in a windbreak row and trim the rest, so the row keeps doing its job.

  • Large Tree Removal

Big pecans and oaks near a house need a plan. A bucket truck or a climber takes the limbs down in pieces with rigging, and the trunk comes down last. See tree removal.

Tree Service in Bono: FAQ

Do you work on acreage outside Bono city limits?

Yes. Most of our Bono work is on homes and small acreage outside town as well as in it. If we can reach the tree with a truck or on foot, we can do the job. Long gravel drives and field access are fine. Just tell us how to find the tree when you call. Gates, too.

Can you remove a tree line along my field?

Yes. We can take out a whole row or just the dead and leaning trees in it. Open ground means we can usually fell trees whole, which keeps the bill down. Brush gets chipped. Logs get hauled or left in piles for you. I'll write up the whole row on one quote.

Should I keep an old pecan tree near my house?

If it's healthy, usually yes. A big pecan gives shade you can't buy and nuts every fall. The risk is heavy limbs over the roof. Taking the dead wood out and shortening the longest limbs cuts that risk way down. Hollow or cracked trunk? Then removal is probably the safer call.

What do you do with the stump grindings?

Your choice. Grindings make decent mulch for beds. Many people rake them into the hole and top it with dirt so grass grows back. If you want the area clean, we haul them off for a little more. We will ask before the grinder starts.

How long does it take to get a crew to Bono?

Bono is about 15 minutes from Jonesboro on US 63, so it is one of the quickest towns for us to reach. Quotes are usually within a few days. Normal jobs are scheduled within a week or two, and storm damage on a house gets moved to the front of the line.
