Monette is a farm town of about 1,500 people in eastern Craighead County, on the stretch everybody calls Buffalo Island, roughly 25 miles east of Jonesboro on Highway 18. It's taken more than its share of weather: a violent EF4 in December 2021, and an EF3 on the edge of town in April 2025. A lot of our work here is still dealing with trees those storms hurt, plus stump grinding where trees came down. Back up toward Lawrence County, we also cover Walnut Ridge.

Monette Trees After Two Big Storms

The December 10, 2021 tornado was a large, violent EF4 that struck Monette and killed one person at a nursing home on the north side. In April 2025 an EF3 damaged homes and buildings around the outskirts. Storms like that leave two kinds of trees behind: the ones that came down, and the ones still standing but hurt.

Damaged Trees Still Standing

A tree can lose half its crown, have the bark peeled off one side or get twisted at the base and still stand for years. Then a plain old thunderstorm finishes it. Watch for cracks that open and close in the wind, dead branches in July and bark coming off in strips. Those mean it's getting worse, not better.

Stumps and Root Plates Left Behind

Plenty of Monette yards still have stumps, half-buried root plates or piles of old storm wood out back. Leaving a stump in the yard is like leaving a fence post in the middle of a hayfield: you'll mow around it for twenty years. A stump grinder takes care of it below the surface, and we haul off what's left.

We've ground stumps out here that had been sitting since the 2021 storm, soft and punky, with a mower blade scar on every side. Takes about twenty minutes each. The owners always wish they'd called sooner.

Buffalo Island Trees and Soil

Monette sits in the St. Francis Lowlands, flat row-crop ground on the Mississippi Alluvial Plain. The St. Francis Sunken Lands just west of town still hold old bottomland forest. In town and on the farms, yard trees stand alone in open wind.

Pecan and hackberry are everywhere in Monette yards. Water oak and silver maple fill in the rest, with a pine or two near older houses. The soil is deep and holds water, so trees grow fast and big. Big, fast trees in soft, wet ground are exactly the ones that tip in storms.

In our experience, the Monette trees still standing after 2021 fall into two groups. Some healed over and are honestly fine with a trim. Others are rotting from the wound inward, and you won't know which is which from the porch.

How much does tree removal cost in Monette?

Tree removal in Monette usually costs $400 to $1,200 per tree, with a national average near $850, according to HomeGuide's 2026 guide. Damaged and dead trees often cost a bit more because they are less predictable to cut. Several trees in one visit can bring the price down 10% to 25% per tree.

Trip time to Buffalo Island is built into the quote. No mileage line. Bundling a removal with stump grinding and a trim in one visit is the best value by far.

Stump Grinding in Monette

Stump grinding Monette homeowners need is mostly catch-up from old storms. We grind 6 to 12 inches below the ground and chase the surface roots, so the spot can be mowed and seeded. Grindings get raked into the hole or hauled away. Your pick.

Helping Older Homeowners

About a quarter of Monette residents are 65 or older, and honestly, nobody should be on a ladder with a chainsaw at any age. We get a lot of small calls out here: one dead limb over the porch, a tree leaning on the fence, a stump the mower keeps hitting. Small jobs are welcome. Bundle a few into one visit and the minimum charge stops mattering.

Trimming to Get Ready for the Next One

Nobody can storm-proof a tree, but you can take away the parts most likely to fail. Deadwooding removes dead and broken limbs that come down first in any wind. Shortening long limbs over the roof means a storm has less to pull on. Crown thinning lets wind pass through the tree instead of pushing on it.

Late fall and winter are the best time for this work. The leaves are down, the structure is easy to see, and it gets done before spring storm season. It also tends to be the slow season for tree crews, which can mean better scheduling.

We'd rather do this work in January than in May. Same tree, same crew, and a lot less chance it's lying across your truck when we get there.

Power Lines and Monette Trees

Out on Buffalo Island, much of the power comes from Craighead Electric Cooperative. Co-op crews clear their lines on the poles. Limbs over the service drop, the wire from the pole to your house, are usually the homeowner's job, and we trim those back as part of normal work. A tree lying on a line is the utility's call first.

Tree Service in Monette: FAQ

Do you really come all the way to Monette?

Yes. Monette is about 35 minutes east of Jonesboro, and we work on Buffalo Island regularly. The quote visit is free. We look at the trees, explain what we would do and leave a written price. We often line up several Monette and Lake City jobs on the same day.

My tree was damaged in the 2021 tornado. Should it come down?

Not always. If the trunk is solid, the roots are firm and the crown has grown back, trimming may be enough. If the trunk is cracked, hollow or the tree leans more each year, removal is the safer choice. We check the trunk, roots and crown and tell you honestly.

Can you grind old stumps from storm cleanup?

Yes. Old stumps are often easier, because the wood has gone soft. We grind them below the ground, break up the surface roots, then leave the grindings or haul them. Got several? Doing them all in one trip costs a lot less per stump than calling us back three times.

Do you take small jobs like one limb?

Yes. One dead limb over the porch or a tree leaning on the fence is a normal call. Most tree services charge a minimum of $100 to $300. So if you've got a few small things bugging you, save them up and we'll knock them all out in one visit.

What should I do if a tree falls on my house?

Get everyone out of the damaged part of the house first. Stay away from any downed wires and call the utility if lines are involved. Take photos, then call your insurance and call us. We take the weight off the roof carefully so the damage does not get worse.
